How do I calculate stud wall framing?

Vertical studs = wall length ÷ spacing + 1 (end stud). Top/bottom plates need ~3 studs per 8 ft of wall (double top + single bottom). Each door/window adds 4 jack studs + 2 headers. Add 10% waste factor.

What's the difference between 2×4 and 2×6 studs?

2×4 (actual 1.5"×3.5") is used for non-load-bearing interior walls. 2×6 (actual 1.5"×5.5") is used for load-bearing exterior walls, providing a deeper cavity for insulation (R-19 vs R-13), typically spaced 24" O.C. for cost efficiency.

Why add a waste factor?

During construction, lumber may have defects, cutting waste, and offcuts. Standard waste factor is 10%. For walls with many openings or complex corners, increase to 15-20%.

Why double top plates?

Double top plates provide structural continuity, allowing wall framing to align and transfer loads between floors. The sole plate is single. Expect ~3 standard studs per 8 ft of wall for plates.
