FAQ
How do I calculate window area?
Window area = width × height. Frames block some glass: single hung deducts ~15%, double hung ~20%, picture windows only ~5%. This calculator auto-deducts based on frame type to give net glass area.
What's the difference between frame types?
Single hung: only the bottom sash moves, moderate frame width. Double hung: both sashes move, widest frame. Picture window: fixed in place, minimal frame, largest net glass area.
Why calculate window area?
Main uses: ordering glass, estimating curtain/blind dimensions, calculating daylight factor (window-to-floor ratio), and assessing heat loss for HVAC sizing. Building codes typically require ≥8% glazing-to-floor ratio.
How do I measure window dimensions?
Measure the rough opening (outer frame edge) width and height, not the glass itself. For replacement windows, measure inside the existing frame brick-to-brick, then subtract ~1/2 inch for installation clearance.
