Step Count Basics

Why Track Steps?

Walking is one of the simplest and safest forms of exercise. Both the WHO and American Heart Association recommend at least 8,000-10,000 steps of moderate-intensity walking per day for adults. Studies show that walking 7,500+ steps/day significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality. Compared to a sedentary lifestyle, walking 10,000 steps/day can reduce all-cause mortality risk by about 50%.

Stride Length

Stride length (horizontal distance per step) is approximately 45% of your height. For example, someone 170cm tall has a stride of about 76.5cm. Walking faster increases stride length, and running stride can reach 60-70% of height. To measure your stride: walk 100m, count steps, then calculate: stride = 100m ÷ step count.

Calorie Formula

Calories burned while walking depend on weight, speed, and distance. Rough formula: Calories ≈ weight(kg) × distance(km) × 0.9. A 70kg person walking 5km burns approximately 315 kcal. Incline, speed, and individual metabolic differences affect actual burn — this calculator uses standard flat-ground walking estimates.

How to Use

Set Personal Parameters: Enter your height and weight first. Stride length can be left blank for automatic calculation (stride = height × 0.45), or manually entered for better accuracy. Accurate parameters improve calculation precision.

Enter Step Count: Get your step count from your phone's pedometer, smartwatch, or fitness tracker. You can also enter a target to plan today's activity. Preset buttons provide common reference values.

Set Daily Goal: WHO recommends 10,000 steps/day. Adjust based on your fitness level. Beginners: start at 5,000 and gradually increase to 10,000. The progress bar gives you a clear visual of your daily progress.

FAQ

How many steps per day is healthy?

The WHO recommends 8,000-10,000 steps per day for adults to maintain health. Research shows that 7,500 steps/day can significantly reduce all-cause mortality. For weight loss, aim for 12,000-15,000 steps. Beginners can start with 5,000 steps and increase gradually.

How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?

Calories burned from 10,000 steps vary by weight and speed. Generally, a 70kg person walking 10,000 steps at a moderate pace (~7-8km) burns about 350-450 kcal. Heavier individuals and faster walking burn more. Rough estimate: ~0.04-0.05 kcal per step.

What is stride length and how to measure it?

Stride length is the horizontal distance covered per step. Average adult stride: ~45% of height — ~75-78cm for men, ~65-70cm for women. Running strides are longer (80-120cm). To measure: walk 100m, count steps, then: stride = 100m ÷ step count. Average multiple measurements for accuracy.

How to track steps more accurately?

For accurate tracking: 1) Measure your actual stride length (walk 100m, record steps); 2) Use a smartphone or dedicated pedometer; 3) Enter accurate weight and height data; 4) Distinguish casual walking from exercise walking (stride and calorie burn differ). This calculator provides estimates for reference.
