Frequently Asked Questions

What are US Savings Bonds?

US Savings Bonds are low-risk investments issued by the US Treasury. There are two main types: Series EE bonds (fixed rate, guaranteed to at least double in 20 years) and Series I bonds (inflation-protected, rate = fixed rate + inflation rate). They are fully backed by the US government, ideal for conservative investors.

What's the difference between Series EE and Series I?

EE bonds offer a fixed rate (currently ~2.5%) and guarantee doubling in value at 20 years. I bond rates have two components: a fixed rate (currently 0.4%) + a semiannual inflation adjustment, protecting purchasing power. I bonds are better during high inflation; EE bonds are better for very long-term holding.

Are savings bond interest taxable?

Savings bond interest is subject to federal income tax but exempt from state and local taxes. Interest may be tax-free if used for qualified education expenses (income limits apply). Investors can report interest annually or defer until redemption. This calculator shows pre-tax returns.

When do savings bonds mature?

Series EE and I bonds have an original maturity of 30 years. EE bonds are guaranteed to double at 20 years. Bonds can be redeemed after 1 year, but redemption within 5 years incurs a 3-month interest penalty. No penalty after 5 years. This tool calculates based on your specified holding period.
