💡 About PCB Trace Width
PCB trace width calculations are based on the IPC-2221 standard. Current flowing through copper traces generates heat — too narrow a trace can overheat or burn out.
IPC-2221 Formula (Outer Layer)
I = k × ΔT0.44 × A0.725
Where: I=Current(A), ΔT=Temp rise(°C), A=Area(mil²), k=0.048 outer / 0.024 inner
Common Copper Weights
- 0.5 oz (17.5μm) - Lightweight PCBs
- 1 oz (35μm) - Standard PCBs
- 2 oz (70μm) - Power boards / high current
- 3 oz (105μm) - High-power applications
Design Tips
- Use at least 1.5× the calculated width for power traces
- Inner layers need wider traces for the same current
- High-frequency signals also require impedance matching
