The Movie Barcode Generator is a free online tool that extracts color information from each frame of a video, compressing each frame into a single color strip arranged chronologically to create a barcode-like visual effect. This unique visualization reveals the overall color trends of an entire video at a glance, widely used in film analysis, color research, and artistic creation. All processing happens locally in your browser — your video is never uploaded to any server.
1. Upload Video: Click the upload area to select a video file, or drag and drop a video onto the page. Supports MP4, WebM, OGG and other common formats.
2. Adjust Parameters: Set the barcode width, height, and sampling interval. A smaller interval produces a more detailed barcode but takes longer.
3. Generate Barcode: Click the "🎬 Generate" button. The tool will extract colors frame by frame and create the barcode. You can monitor progress during processing.
4. Download Result: Once satisfied with the preview, click "💾 Download PNG" to save the barcode image.
Filmmakers and critics can use video barcodes to analyze a film's color narrative. Different directors have unique color styles — barcodes reveal the overall color rhythm of an entire film, aiding in color storytelling analysis.
Video barcodes have unique aesthetic value and can be used as art material for poster design, album covers, website backgrounds, and other creative projects. Different videos produce distinctly different barcode styles with striking visual impact.
Video editors can use barcodes to quickly check color consistency across an entire video, detecting color discontinuities or white balance jumps to ensure smooth, unified color throughout the final cut.
The concept of movie barcodes was first popularized by the film enthusiast community. By arranging the average color of each frame chronologically, it creates a barcode-like visual similar to product barcodes. This visualization method reveals color patterns that are difficult to notice during normal viewing — for example, the green tint of The Matrix or the orange tones of Mad Max become immediately apparent in barcode form. Technically, this tool uses the HTML5 Canvas API to draw each video frame to a hidden canvas, then extracts pixel data via getImageData to calculate average colors, all processed locally in the browser.

Completely safe. All video processing happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your video file is never uploaded to any server. Your data stays on your device at all times.
All formats that your browser can play, including MP4, WebM, and OGG. MP4 (H.264) is recommended for best compatibility.
Yes. You can download the barcode as a PNG image. Customize the width, height, and sampling interval to generate barcodes at different precision levels.
The sampling interval determines how often a frame is sampled for color extraction. A smaller interval produces a more detailed barcode but takes longer to process. The default is 1 frame per second, suitable for most use cases.
Processing speed depends on video length and sampling interval. A 1-hour video at 1 frame per second takes about 30 seconds. We recommend starting with a larger interval for preview, then reducing it for a high-precision version.
