Volume Formulas by Profile

Round Bar: V = π × (d/2)² × L (d=diameter, L=length)

Square Bar: V = a² × L (a=side, L=length)

Hex Bar: V = (√3/2) × a² × L (a=across flats, L=length)

Round Tube: V = π × (R² - r²) × L (R=outer radius, r=inner radius, L=length)

Square Tube: V = (A² - a²) × L (A=outer side, a=inner side, L=length)

Sheet/Plate: V = length × width × thickness

Angle Iron: V = (A + B - t) × t × L (A/B=legs, t=thickness, L=length)

How to calculate steel plate weight?

Steel plate weight = length × width × thickness × density. For example, a carbon steel plate with density 7.85 g/cm³ measuring 1000mm × 500mm × 10mm weighs 100 × 50 × 1 × 7.85 = 39250g ≈ 39.25kg.

What is the formula for round bar weight?

Round bar weight = π × (diameter/2)² × length × density. For example, a steel round bar with 50mm diameter and 1000mm length has volume = 3.14159 × 25² × 1000 = 1963495 mm³ = 1963.5 cm³, weight = 1963.5 × 7.85 = 15413g ≈ 15.41kg.

What is the density of steel?

Carbon steel density is approximately 7.85 g/cm³ (7850 kg/m³). Stainless steel is about 7.93-8.00 g/cm³, and cast iron is about 7.20 g/cm³. Different alloy compositions cause slight variations; this tool uses commonly accepted industry standard values.

What is the density of aluminum?

Pure aluminum has a density of about 2.70 g/cm³ (2700 kg/m³), and aluminum alloys like 6061 are also around 2.70 g/cm³. Aluminum is roughly one-third the density of steel, making it widely used where weight reduction is needed.
