FAQ

What is crop factor?

Crop factor is the ratio of a sensor's diagonal length to that of full frame (35mm, ~43.27mm diagonal). For example, an APS-C sensor with ~28.4mm diagonal has a crop factor of about 1.5x. It determines the magnification of equivalent focal length.

What is 35mm equivalent focal length?

35mm equivalent focal length = actual focal length × crop factor. It represents the focal length needed on a full-frame camera to achieve the same field of view, making it easy to compare across different camera systems.

How is angle of view calculated?

Diagonal angle of view = 2 × arctan(sensor diagonal / (2 × focal length)). Horizontal and vertical angles use the sensor width and height respectively. This tool performs the conversion automatically.

Why do phone cameras have such small focal lengths?

Phones use very small sensors with actual focal lengths of just a few millimeters. When multiplied by a large crop factor, the equivalent focal length matches common full-frame ranges, which is why manufacturers advertise equivalent focal length.
