Child-Pugh is a scoring system for assessing cirrhosis severity and predicting surgical risk. Originally proposed by Charles Child in 1964 and later modified by Pugh.
Child A (5-6): compensated cirrhosis, low surgical risk, ~100% 1-year survival. Child B (7-9): moderate decompensation. Child C (10-15): severe decompensation, very high surgical risk, ~45% 1-year survival.
MELD uses continuous variables for transplant waitlist prioritization; Child-Pugh uses categorical variables for cirrhosis severity and surgical risk assessment. They are complementary.
