Frequently asked questions
How does this calculator estimate yarn usage?
It uses the swatch-weight ratio method: knit a sample of known size, weigh it to get grams per square centimeter, then divide the project area by the swatch area to get a scaling factor, multiply by the swatch weight for the project weight, and convert grams to meters and balls via the yarn meterage. This is the standard, reliable estimating approach in the knitting community.
Why do I also enter yarn meterage (m/100g)?
Grams only tell you weight, but yarn is usually sold by meters per ball. Different yarn weights pack very different lengths into 100g (lace ~900m, super bulky ~70m). Entering meterage lets the calculator convert grams into the meters and balls you actually need to buy. Ball bands typically state it as "230m / 100g".
Is the estimate accurate? Should I buy extra?
The closer your swatch matches the project stitch and density, the more accurate it is. Real knitting has edges, bind-offs and colorwork waste, so add 10%β15%, especially for limited colors that are hard to re-order. Buy "balls needed + 1" to avoid dye-lot mismatch.
