How to Calculate Landscape Rock
Estimating landscape rock is critical for budgeting and ordering. The common mistake is eyeballing it — measuring coverage area, choosing the right depth, and applying the correct stone density eliminates guesswork and saves money.
Different stone types vary dramatically in density: lightweight lava rock is only 0.6-0.9 t/m³, while dense river rock can reach 2.6 t/m³. Using the wrong density can throw your estimate off by 2-3×. Our calculator includes presets for six common types.
❓ FAQ
How deep should I lay landscape rock?
5-10 cm (2-4") is typical. Walking paths: 5-7 cm. Decorative cover: 3-5 cm. Driveway base: 10-15 cm. Always lay landscape fabric underneath first.
How much area does 1 ton of gravel cover?
At 1.6 t/m³ density and 5 cm depth, 1 ton covers about 12.5 m². Use this calculator with your exact parameters for a precise number.
How many tons in a bulk bag?
A standard bulk bag (Big Bag) typically holds 0.85 metric tons of stone. Check with your supplier for their exact bag capacity as it can vary.
