Formula: angle α = 2·arctan(sensor dimension / (2 × focal length)); framed width = sensor width / focal length × distance; equivalent focal length = focal length × (43.27 / sensor diagonal).

Frequently Asked Questions

How is field of view (FOV) calculated?

From the thin-lens similar-triangle relation, the angle of view for one dimension is α = 2·arctan(sensor dimension / (2 × focal length)). Substituting the sensor width, height and diagonal gives the horizontal, vertical and diagonal field of view in degrees.

What does 35mm equivalent focal length mean?

Equivalent focal length = actual focal length × crop factor, where crop factor = full-frame diagonal (≈43.27mm) / your sensor diagonal. It lets you compare angles of view across formats — e.g. a 35mm lens on APS-C sees about like 52mm on full frame.

How do I know what area I can frame at a given distance?

Framed width = sensor width / focal length × distance, and framed height = sensor height / focal length × distance (keep units consistent). Enter a shooting distance to get the covered width and height at that distance.
