How to Calculate Asphalt Quantity
The basic formula for calculating asphalt is: Volume = Area × Thickness, then Tons = Volume × Density × Compaction Factor.
- Rectangle: Area = Length × Width
- Circle: Area = π × Radius²
- Volume: Area × Thickness (ensure consistent units)
- Tonnage: Volume × Asphalt Density (hot mix ≈ 145 lb/ft³ or 2,323 kg/m³)
Recommended Asphalt Thickness
- 🚗 Residential driveway: 2-3 inches (5-7.5 cm)
- 🅿️ Commercial parking lot: 3-4 inches (7.5-10 cm)
- 🛣️ Road surface: 2-4 inches (5-10 cm)
- 🚛 Heavy-duty areas: 4-6 inches (10-15 cm)

Compaction Factor Explained
The compaction factor converts loose asphalt volume to compacted volume. Hot mix asphalt is compacted during installation, typically reducing volume by 10%-25%. If your thickness refers to the compacted thickness (which is standard practice), set the factor to 1.0. If you need to calculate loose material for ordering, set it to 1.1-1.25.
