πŸ“– About 401k Employer Match

What is an employer match?

An employer match is a benefit provided by companies to encourage employees to save for retirement. The company deposits additional funds into the 401k account based on a certain percentage of the employee's contribution. This money is "free" extra compensation.

Common match plans

50% match on the first 6%: Employee contributes 6%, company gives 3%. 100% match on the first 3-5%: Employee contributes 3%, company gives 3%. Tiered: For example, 100% match on the first 4%, and 50% match on the next 4%.

Why shouldn't you miss out on the match?

An employer match is equivalent to an instant return of 100% or more. If the company matches 50% (contribute $1, get $0.5), the actual return rate is 50%. It is recommended to contribute at least enough to get the full match.
